Cemeteries and churches are not the only venues at which to say goodbye to a loved one. These days a number of different locations host civil funeral ceremonies for those seeking a non-religious funeral service in a special venue.
Hertford Castle is one such venue and our caring, compassionate staff will ensure your farewell to a special friend or relative is a fitting and memorable occasion. Having chosen our beautiful grade one listed 15th century Castle as the setting for your service you will be assigned a dedicated team to help guide you through the process.
The service itself is conducted by a Civil Celebrant and can be as relaxed and informal as you wish. It will obviously be a very personal ceremony and the Eulogy, which can be delivered by the funeral celebrant or any of the family and friends, forms a major part of the ceremony.
Following the service guests can celebrate the life of their loved one with a buffet or sit down meal if they choose.
Hertford Town Council, which runs the Castle, is also responsible for Hertford Cemetery and Cemeteries Officer Pat Chappell is always happy to talk to bereaved families and offer advice and guidance on burial options. She can be contacted at email@example.com or on 01992 552885.
The Castle, with its fascinating history and beautiful grounds, is also a popular venue for wakes following more traditional funeral services. Conveniently situated within walking distance of many of Hertford’s churches it is an ideal setting for friends and family to gather to celebrate the life of the deceased.
With a choice of rooms from the historic Robing Room with its beautiful 15th century stone, brick and timber wall to the larger Downshire Suite which can host up to 60 guests seated (100 standing) the Castle is the perfect venue for a wake. To keep costs down guests are welcome to provide their own catering or we have a caterer we are happy to recommend.
For those who prefer to just host a drinks reception we are happy for them to provide their own alcohol for a corkage fee of £150 or alternatively we can provide a cash bar.
